Man who shot dead three-year-old girl, 2, in Utah was mentally ill
A man who killed his three-month-old daughter, two-year old daughter and her two-month old brother and himself in a rural Utah community was mentally unwell, authorities said Wednesday.
The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon near the village of Cresco, about 45 miles (65 kilometers) northeast of Salt Lake City, Utah’s U.S. Department of Public Safety said.
Officials said the victim, who was found by her parents in the back yard, had a history of mental health issues.
The man, whose name was not released, has been arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of kidnapping, the department said.
Authorities said the toddler, who had cerebral palsy, died after the father shot and killed himself.
The toddler’s parents had not been able to contact him, the Department of Justice said.
The man had also been detained by police in relation to the incident.
