When it comes to tech and innovation, Chicago is the hub of the tech world
CNET’s The Tech Boom: What the tech industry looks like right now article The tech boom is in full swing in Chicago, and the city’s tech scene is booming.
That’s according to the city and state’s tourism board, which announced Monday that tech companies have committed $2.2 billion in investment since January 2016.
That’s up from the $1.6 billion the city had committed in fiscal year 2016.
It’s also more than triple the $845 million in investments made by other cities.
Chicago has been dubbed “the tech hub” for its tech workers, with companies like Apple, Amazon, and Tesla contributing to more than $2 billion worth of employment in the city.
But that boom has brought a few downsides.
There have been fewer tech jobs than there were a few years ago, and startups have struggled to find customers, according to a report released last year by the University of Chicago.
The report found that companies with at least $100 million in annual revenue in Chicago didn’t have a significant presence in the state.
That makes it hard for startups to attract customers and growth.
